CR and tsunami recovery

The 2008 Manthan award went to Kalanjiam Samuga Vanoli, a CRS funded by Madurai’s Dhan Foundation and operating in coastal Nagapattinam district which had been devastated by the 2004 tsunami. ‘People need information as much as water, food, medicine or shelter. Information can save lives, livelihoods and resources.’
Kalanjiam Samuga Vanoli has played a very significant role in the district’s recovery from the tsunami, preparedness for possible calamities in the future, promoting livelihoods for poverty alleviation and sustainabilty.
Another group Namma Dhwani in Karnataka has been tied up in red tape for a long time but has successfully used narrowcasting methods to mobilise the community
